Last year I was fortunate enough to learn how to use a planimeter and a compass.
During a Christmas in Finland J. Ö. thought me how to use the planimeter, a measuring device to calculate areas, on an old map. We compared the areas of USA and China. After the christmas, during my travel to Turkey I was very luck to listen to an experienced survey engineer at the land registry cadastre. We did a very basic distance calculation and mapping a small area on a paper using only a compass.
So my new year's resolution is to be able to draw or edit a map on a light table.
