Atlas of Inspiring Protests; TANK MAN - Tiananmen Square

ABOUT THE MAP

On June 4, 1989, the Chinese government sent armed troops into Beijing’s Tiananmen Square which means Gate of Heavenly Peace, to clear the streets of demonstrators. The brutal intervention killed at least several hundred peaceful protesters, mainly students who wanted political and economic reforms in their country.

The morning after this incident an unidentified man with shopping bags in his hands stood up in front of the military tanks that were driving out of the Tiananmen Square and blocked their way. This mysterious man with his courageous act showed us that  even small steps can stop a big army.
